Friends of the Young Disabled or FOYD is a Swansea based registered charity, established in 1985,〔Open Charities Org. Charity number 516616〕 which provides a centre for young disabled people and children to meet and use its facilities to promote learning opportunities, engage in social activities and have fun. It is listed with the Swansea Council for Voluntary Services 〔(Swansea Council for Voluntary Services )〕 and supported by the Swansea Round Table 〔(Swansea Round Table )〕 Friends of the Young Disabled was formed in 1969 by Gordon Moore one of its founding Trustees and its first Chairman. Prior to obtaining the current centre in 1985, members met weekly at St. Joseph’s Church Hall at Waun Wen. Extensive training of able bodied young people in first aid, home nursing, feeding, catheterising, toileting, handling of disabled persons and wheelchair usage was undertaken. This training enabled members to take disabled children and young people on subsidised holidays all over the world with the help of such organisations as the British Council. Expert help was given to the Muscular Dystrophy Society on their foreign holidays and this help was extended to any group that requested it. ==New Premises== In September 1985, FOYD acquired the old Cwmfelyn works office and laboratory building that was due for demolition and with the advantage of an Urban Aid Grant worth £168,000.00 and with extensive help from the community, the current Centre emerged. It is held on a 99 year lease from the City and County of Swansea at a peppercorn rent.
